Verrucas and warts are skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which infects the top layer of skin, often on the soles of the feet (plantar warts). While generally harmless, they can be persistent and challenging to treat. At The Podiatry Centre, we offer a range of advanced treatment options tailored to effectively eliminate them.
Swift Microwave Therapy uses a focused microwave energy to heat and stimulate the body's immune response to the verruca virus. It's the most effective verruca treatment available at 75.9% after 3 sessions done one month apart. It's also safe and approved for well controlled, low risk diabetics.
The procedure is quick, requires no anesthetic or dressings, and allows you to return to normal activities immediately. While some discomfort is possible during treatment, it is only for a few seconds. There may also be a bit of soreness after each treatment.
Typically, 2 to 3 sessions are required, but some individuals may need 4.
Also known as Faulkener's Needling, it works by using a sterile needle to repeatedly puncture the wart, which helps to push affected tissue deeper and trigger a stronger immune response.
This is a minor surgical procedure performed under a local anaesthetic, and requires you not to drive for a few hours afterwards. The needling itself is painless, the only discomfort you may feel is from the initial injection of the local anaesthetic.
Typically, 1-2 sessions are required, and each treatment includes scab removal. The success rate is reported at 69-70% after 3 months.
Please note that needling is only available at Cosham and Chichester.
Cryotherapy, or freezing therapy, uses liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy verrucas, and is generally a good option for treating verrucas in children.
The procedure is quick, requires no anesthetic or dressings, and allows you to return to normal activities immediately. While some discomfort is possible during treatment, it is only for a few seconds, and the area may be blistered for a few days afterwards.
Typically, around 5 sessions are required.
The type of treatment and number of sessions needed depends on the size, depth, and location of the wart or verruca. Larger or more stubborn verrucae may require multiple sessions. Your practitioner will discuss a personalised treatment plan with you during your consultation.
Both Swift and Needling treatments have higher success rates than over-the-counter or acid treatments, at around 70%.
They work in slightly different ways and suit different people depending on comfort levels and medical history.
